Philadelphia Flyers at St. Louis Blues
The Flyers have lost three of their last four games and are struggling to score goals, something that was pretty easy for them coming out of the Olympic break. In their last four games, they are averaging just 2.5 goals for/game after averaging 3.7 per game for the 11 games before that. One the bright side, they have allowed just 11 goals against in those last four games so Steve Mason (who has allowed just 16 goals in his last 8 games, mind you) has been doing his part. I do worry about this team going into St. Louis, though. Namely, their ability to prevent goals from going in.
The Blues have gone just 3-3 in their last six games and the disparity they have shown is quite dramatic: In the three wins, they outscored the opposition 11-4. In the three losses, they have been outscored 12-3. It’s a stretch that is pretty boom-or-bust and has been punctuated by exceptional games from members of the top line.
These two teams met a little over a week ago in Philadelphia and they Flyers skated away with a 4-1 win. The Flyers were grossly outplayed all game long as the possessions stats (59-41) and the shot differential (33-19) would indicate.
Traditionally, Eastern Conference teams haven’t done so well in St. Louis this year. With Philadelphia’s scoring drying up, it might not be a terrible idea to chase after Ryan Miller in goal for this one. I will also be looking at different Blues plays from the power play.
