6. Matt Harvey returns to anchor ever-changing, yet dangerous Mets rotation.
Matt Harvey returns to anchor what is expected to be one of the league’s best pitching staffs. Unfortunately, Zach Wheeler’s status for the upcoming season currently hangs in the balance — more on this, later — but Jacob deGrom looks poised to provide a devastating one-two punch behind Harvey. In 11 innings pitched, deGrom has struck out twelve batters, allowing six hits and three earned runs.
The return of Matt Harvey had been long anticipated, but the potential loss of Wheeler puts a damper on how great the Mets’ rotation could have been. The silver lining – if one ever exists with an injury – is that top pitching prospect Noah Syndergaard is logging innings this spring. He may find his way onto the roster shortly to help form a new three-headed monster, albeit not the one the Mets had expected years ago.
The audition is officially underway.
