Edmonton Oilers at Colorado Avalanche The Oilers slide continues, as they’ve now lost four in a row, having been outscored 14-4 over those games, and shutout twice. Over those games, they’ve gone 0-for-9 on the power play and averaged around 27 shots on goal in those games. Not only are they not drawing many penalties, but they aren’t generating much at even strength either. Colorado has been playing very inconsistent hockey this month, going 3-4-1 in December to date. They got rolled in Edmonton, then won the next night in Calgary. They lose back to back games, then went into Winnipeg and took two points in a shootout. Which team shows up tonight is anyone’s guess. As bad as the Oilers have been, a lack of focus against a team with that much skill will see three goals fly in your net before you’ve built a sweat (which Edmonton did when they destroyed Colorado 8-2 a couple of weeks ago). The saving grace for the Avalanche is that Edmonton’s penalty kill has been shaky at times lately. While Colorado’s power play has been beyond deplorable (one PP goal in their last 12 games), it should get back on track tonight against a team that is just over 62-percent on the penalty kill in their last five games.
