Beltran, whose 16 career postseason home runs are an MLB record, never got the chance to swing for the fence. Kolten Wong, who pinch ran for Allen Craig after the hobbled pinch hitter singled to lead off the inning, was picked off by Red Sox closer Koji Uehara to end the game and seal the a 4-2 Boston victory in St. Louis.
After David Ortiz gave the Red Sox a 2-1 lead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth, St. Louis bounced back with three runs in the top of the seventh inning and closer Trevor Rosenthal struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to seal the 4-2 victory in Boston and a split in the best of seven World Series.
