Daily Fantasy Hockey DFS Value Update – January 31

Henrik Zetterberg

St. Louis Blues at Carolina Hurricanes

After a stretch that saw the Blues lose four of six games, they have now won three straight and are winning games the way they did late last year and most of the year before that: defense and goaltending. Jaroslav Halak has allowed just five goals against in his last four starts (going 4-0 in those games) while the Blues have scored just eight goals in their last three games. Their team shooting percentage was going to come down but thankfully it’s a time when Halak is en fuego so the difference is being made up elsewhere.

Carolina is having a very solid January, going 9-4 in their first 13 games and, like St. Louis, the goaltending has been a big reason why: Anton Khudobin has started every game this month and allowed just 29 goals in 13 games. In fact, Khudobin hasn’t allowed more than three goals against in any game yet this season. Regardless of the competition faced, Khudobin is giving his team a chance to win every game. It also helps when Alex Semin and Eric Staal are on the tear they are on (they have 23 points in their last 23 games combined).

This should be a tightly-contested hockey game. Both teams are playing pretty good hockey and both teams have goaltenders playing exceptionally well right now. As good a game as this might be to watch it’s not great for DFS. This game looks like a coin flip to me and I’m not willing to risk either goalie because of it. Expect the Staal line to match with the Backes line so I would be looking at depth players on both sides to round out lineups.
