Daily Fantasy Hockey Picks for April 16

Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin

I’ve lived in Massachusetts my whole life. My wife and I lived about a mile from the Boston Marathon finishing line for seven years. Last year we walked around the city and cheered for the runners on Marathon Monday. This year, with our first baby, we weren’t able to make it to the Boston Marathon.

I listened to the Boston morning sports talk show Toucher and Rich this morning and heard Rich Shertenlieb’s amazing first hand account of the day. I poured through boston.com‘s devastating photos of the scene. Sports Jerks own Tom Laverty wrote a powerful piece on his thoughts on the connection between our need to find normalcy after tragedy and how sports can be an important part of that process.

In Laverty’s piece he states, “Sports are a way for us to show our strength in the face of adversity, to show resilience when everything seems to be crumbling, and since 9/11, it has become a way for Americans to say that the show must go on, even when everything seems like it’s come to a grinding halt.”

This is my way of stating the show must go on. Simple daily fantasy hockey picks. It’s a small start, but it’s a start. It’s part of my normalcy.

With that preamble, I am going to play daily fantasy hockey tonight … as strange at that feels today … this is the lineup I’ll use tonight on FanDuel:

Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin
Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin is a good daily fantasy hockey play even at his hefty cost Geoff Burke USA TODAY Sports

LW: Alexander Ovechkin $9,900—His price tag is worth it. Since Apr. 6 he has seven goals and two assists.

LW: Jiri Tlusty $5,800—Tlusty is a decent value at $5,800. He has 19 goals this season including two against Boston on Apr. 13.

RW: Phil Kessel $7,500—Kessel is a semi-bargain at $7,500. He has six goals over his past four games.

RW: Kyle Wellwood $4,000—Wellwood is my value pick of the night. He has two goals and one assist over his past three games.

C: Marcus Johansson $4,600—Monitor Johansson’s status as he’s officially listed as day-to-day with a lower body injury. This pick is made solely because Johansson plays on Washington’s top line.

C: Claude Giroux $7,000—Giroux has four points in his last three games. His $7,000 price tag is nice for a player with 42 points.

D: Mike Green $5,500—Green has 10 shots and two goals in his past two games.

D: Drew Doughty $5,100—Doughty has four goals in his past five games.

G: Steve Mason $5,600—If you know my picks you know I love cheap goaltending. Mason at $5,600 is about as cheap as they come. Mason is probable but not confirmed. Continue to monitor his status.

Good luck tonight.
