Phoenix Coyotes at Winnipeg Jets

Phoenix desperately needed the Olympic break as they were a team that just couldn’t find consistency and had lost quite a few games in the last third of the season. This is a team that just doesn’t do anything extremely well: 14^th in goals for, 21^st in goals against, 8^th on the power play and 24^th on the penalty kill. They’re also 19^th in puck possession, which is a reason for their middling goals for/against rates. It’s just not an impressive team in any fashion and they have a lot of work to do down the stretch.

Winnipeg got good news as Evander Kane has been activated off the injured reserve after missing time with a hand infection. They also got bad news as Ondrej Pavelec managed to return from Sochi. Just kidding. Kind of.

Anyway, the Jets were one of the NHL’s top teams for the final three weeks heading into Sochi and a lot of it had to do with their goaltender. Keep in mind that goalies can go on hot streaks just like players and that Pavelec is not a good goalie.

The last time Phoenix came into Winnipeg was the middle of January and they got shelled 5-1. That was also the first game of Coach Paul Maurice’s tenure. I anticipate another Jets win here tonight if only because of the context of this game (Olympics, vacation etc.).

For those wondering: Kane was slotted on the second line with Mark Scheifele and Blake Wheeler a.k.a “The Fun Line.”
