Top 10 NFL Thanksgiving Games of All-Time

Mark Sanchez

Miami 16, Dallas 14 (1993) – The Cowboys were on their way to a second consecutive Super Bowl title in the 1993 season, but it was a year fraught with difficulties. Emmitt Smith had held out through the first two games of the season, and Jerry Jones finally gave in to the star running back after Dallas got off to an 0-2 start.

The Cowboys had appeared to right themselves by Thanksgiving, as they took a 7-3 record with them as they squared off with the Dolphins on a snowy day at Texas Stadium. The Cowboys had a 14-13 lead in the final seconds, but the Dolphins were in a position to win as they brought PK Pete Stoyanovich to attempt a game-winning 41-yard field goal. The Cowboys blocked the kick, and as it was spinning harmlessly on the 10-yards line, Dallas defensive tackle Leon Lett came racing in to attempt a recovery.

Lett didn’t understand that he didn’t have to do a thing, and that by touching the ball, it gave Miami a chance to recover. The ball bounced off Lett’s body, and the Dolphins recovered. Stoyanovich returned to the field and kicked a game-winning 19-yard field goal. Lett’s gaffe cost the Cowboys that day, but they would not be denied the rest of the season as Jimmy Johnson’s team won their second title in a row.
