7 Takeaways From Week 5 In The NFL

Tom Brady

Geno benched at the half

Geno Smith completed 4-of-12 passes for 27 yards and a pick, earning a passer rating of 7.6, so Jets coach Rex Ryan benched his starting quarterback at the half. According to reports, Smith had missed a handful of meetings leading up to the game against San Diego, but it was clearly his ineffectiveness leading the offense that convinced Ryan to insert veteran Michael Vick at the start of the third quarter.

Vick fared no better than Smith, completing 8-of-19 passes for 47 yards and leading the Jets to as many points as they were able to record with Smith behind center — zero.

Smith has already been named the starter Week 6 against the Broncos, so perhaps Week 5’s benching will serve as a wakeup call that the second-year passer needs to start performing or his full-time job will be on the line.
