Detroit Red Wings at Montreal Canadiens
Both teams played, and won, last night, so what happens tonight is anyone’s guess. With the run that Detroit has been on, they’re nearly a lock for the playoffs now. The Habs know the importance of this game though, as they started back-up goalie Peter Budaj last night to save Carey Price for this one.
Detroit has won four straight games and has allowed 30 or more shots against just once in their last seven games. They’re winning a bunch of close games so it’s not like they’re doing anything exceptional, they’re just playing solid hockey and Jimmy Howard is holding down the fort in net. While Pavel Datsyuk returned last night, he’s not a guarantee tonight so avoid him in lineups that lock early.
The Habs are 9-2-0 in their last 11 games but one thing the Habs have done lately is give up a ton of shots against: in their last four games, Montreal has allowed 35.8 shots against per game. That is way too many to expect to keep winning. The top line of David Desharnais, Max Pacioretty and Thomas Vanek is just rolling, though.
Detroit has taken two of three from the Habs but the total goal differential is just plus-3 for the Wings. With the Habs at home and both teams on the second of a back to back, I’ll defer to the home team. Again, I would stay away from both goalies and just look for value plays to round out lineups.
