Daily Fantasy Hockey DFS Value Update – April 5

Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports

New Jersey Devils at Carolina Hurricanes

With a big win last night, the Devils still have a faint hope of playoffs. It’s ironic that their playoff hopes hinge on a game against Carolina, a team that has given them problems this year: The ‘Canes have taken a game from New Jersey this year (out of three) and have scored eight goals in those games. New Jersey played last night but in another twist, they played Carolina as the second game of a back to back a month ago, and won 5-4. I’ve learned to never count out the Devils as far as DFS is concerned (they do have 16 goals in their last six games) and I won’t do that tonight.

Carolina has won two in a row, both against (likely) playoff teams in Dallas and Pittsburgh. One problem is that they are still dealing with day-to-day injuries from Alex Semin and Jiri Tlusty, something that limits their depth up front (which they’ll need against New Jersey). They have also given up at least 31 shots on goal in five of their last six games so despite their 3 goals for/game average in their last six games, they are not playing well defensively and relying on goaltending. That’s not optimal to sustain success.

In three games this year, the Devils have managed 13 goals against the ‘Canes on 84 shots, an indication that Carolina plays poor defense against New Jersey. As far as DFS goes, I don’t really like either goalie (though whoever starts for the Devils would be a sneaky GPP play) and will just look at top-end skaters for good prices.
