Daily Fantasy Hockey DFS Value Update – March 9

I generally do not pick two players playing against each other in the same game for a daily fantasy hockey lineup. The same applies for a goalie and a player from opposite teams. You might see two players among the “value picks” from opposite teams, but that doesn’t mean you should take them both. No matter the value, you’re also likely cannibalizing points, so any gains made below a certain price point – the point where production and cost intersect – can be lost if production declines overall as well.

There are many things that determine value: The player’s history (both short and long-term), the price, recent production, opponent, line matching at even-strength, power play time and injuries are just some of the factors to consider. The “Top Value” doesn’t necessarily mean the cheapest player, either.

Finally, as far as goalies go, it’s the one position I’ll pay through the nose for if I really like the match-up. The same applies for back-ups with good match-ups. In a given night, with a full slate of games, I won’t have more than three different goalies across all my lineups, usually two. I’ll name the goalies I like specifically in the match-ups they appear in.

Detroit Red Wings at New York Rangers

The Red Wings demolished the New Jersey Devils their last game out 7-4 on Friday night, one day after going to overtime with the Avalanche. The Wings have scored at least three goals in seven of their last ten games and have ten power play goals in that span as well. The penalty kill has been excellent of late, killing off 24 of their last 26 opportunities. It’s been the top line that has done the damage of late with Gustav Nyquist having a four point night on Friday and Johan Franzen with two points a couple of games before that.

The Rangers had lost three straight games before their win over Carolina on Friday night. The offense has been just fine with 11 goals (three of those on the power play) in their last four games, but the goaltending has been a bit off in allowing 15 goals in those four contests. The Rangers have essentially turned into a one-power-play-unit team with Martin St. Louis and Derek Stepan on the ice with Brad Richards and Rick Nash.

New York has won both matchups with Detroit this year and there were just six total goals scored in those two games. It’s not for a lack of trying; those two games saw an average total of 80 shots taken by both teams. It would seem that the percentages should be catching up with them and this could be a 4-3 game or something of that nature.

I will be avoiding both goalies in this game but will be taking lots of players from both sides for cash games.
