New Jersey Devils at Colorado Avalanche

New Jersey is coming off a 4-1 win in Montréal on Tuesday but I wonder how much they have left in the tank; the Devils will play their fifth game in eight days tonight and this isn’t a young team. That started to show through on Monday as they allowed 30 shots on goal for just the second time in eight games. There is a one day turnaround for them to get to Colorado and I’m not sure how much they’ll be in to tonight’s game.

The Avalanche are coming off a 3-2 overtime win in Chicago on Tuesday night, a game they probably deserved to lose. That said, Colorado has one regulation loss in their last nine games at home (to Calgary, of all teams) and they have scored 30 goals in those nine games. If they manage to put up a three-spot on the Devils tonight, this game is all but over.

With Cory Schneider starting for New Jersey tonight, I’m not overly bullish on the Colorado players, especially as they continue to play without P.A. Parenteau and Paul Stastny. That said, if you’re looking for a potential shutout tonight, Semyon Varlamov is a decent bet.
