Montréal Canadiens at Ottawa Senators

Montréal lost 4-1 a couple of nights ago to New Jersey on the back of Carey Price’s fourth blow-up of the season, which is actually a pretty good mark for 37 games. What it did show was the inconsistency of a mediocre team, something that was readily visible in the Senators as recently as a month ago. The power play is still on life support, having converted exactly zero of their last 17 opportunities.

Ottawa continued their tear with a 3-0 win in Minnesota on Tuesday night, their second shutout win in their last nine games after zero such wins in the previous 37 games (their last shutout win was on opening night). The Sens have amassed 13 of a possible 14 points in their last seven games and it’s a mix of good special teams, consistent possession play and a bit of good fortune.

One of Ottawa’s most recent wins was a 4-3 overtime win against this very Montréal team. It was a game where the Senators shut down the Habs’ power play and scored on the man advantage themselves. Montréal doesn’t have the horses to skate with this Sens team when they’re playing like they are if they don’t take advantage of their power plays.

I expect Ottawa to take tonight’s game and Craig Anderson might make a good play in net depending on how you view his salary (it’s starting to get a bit high but not out of control). Also, one thing to note: Ottawa was putting out their fourth line a lot against Douglas Murray last game, which meant Erik Karlsson was on the ice with him quite a bit as well. I don’t like to spend a lot on defensemen but Karlsson could be worth it tonight depending how your roster’s constructed.
