Winnipeg Jets at St. Louis Blues

The Jets blew a third period lead their last time out against Washington and lost the game 4-2. The thing is, not much has changed for the Jets since coach Paul Maurice got there other than goaltender Ondrej Pavelec has saved 92-percent of the shots he’s faced since the their new coach was introduced. Before that, it was under 90-percent. I don’t doubt the impact that a coach can have on a team but when the underlying numbers stay the same and the goaltender goes on a hot streak it tells me that’s all it is, a goalie on a hot streak. The cracks are showing as Pavelec has allowed 16 goals in his last five games for an .884 save percentage. And we’re not talking elite teams either, they were games against Toronto, Nashville, Vancouver, Carolina, and Washington.

St. Louis has needed extra time in their last three games, going 2-0-1 in those contests. After seeing their goals go dry for a few games, the Blues scored 10 in those three contests to overcome some shaky goaltending. One big advantage for the Blues in this game is the special teams; Winnipeg’s power play has gone goalless in six straight games while the Blues are 94.7-percent on the penalty kill in their last six games. That forces the Jets to try and win this at even strength and that plays to the Blues’ favour.

The Blues won the first two meetings this year between the two teams but they were both one goal games and that’s probably because the two teams’ forwards can match up well enough against each other. If anything, I can see the Blues filling the net but I won’t be stacking them per se.

Note: After a brief trial at the end of two games ago with T.J. Oshie back on the top line, Chris Stewart made his way back with Backes/Steen in their last game. He’s still pretty cheap.
