Marlins already regretting Mat Latos signing.
While the Marlins drew the short straw of facing the vaunted Braves to open their season, they have no one to blame but themselves for the obviously disastrous signing of pitcher Mat Latos. In Latos’ debut with the team, he lasted two complete outs while surrendering seven earned runs. His 94.50 ERA sits just below the ‘Latos Line’ – created specifically for this column and set at 100, since the triple-digit ERA is so rarely approached – and it arguably could have gone worse.
Miami is stuck with Latos for the foreseeable future. But what about the rest of his ‘owners’? Is the fantasy baseball world ready to throw in the towel? Judging by the rate at which he retired batters in his first start – one out for every five batters faced – he’ll likely need to improve to warrant a roster spot one more time around the rotation.
Then again, unless he is projected to maintain his 94.50 ERA throughout the season, he is basically a mathematical lock to turn in a better performance next time around. From an over-reaction to a defined path, buy low on Latos and start him!
