McCarthy getting second-guessed, but for no good reason
Everybody is playing Monday Morning Quarterback, especially after Green Bay coughed up a 16-point lead and was a little more than two minutes away from returning to the Super Bowl.
Coach Mike McCarthy opted to take points in the form of field goals early on, and consequently those decisions may have cost him later. But in the moment, McCarthy was right. And against the Seattle defense, any points are welcomed. It was the right move by McCarthy, who could not have predicted Seattle would score twice with under two minutes remaining thanks in part to a fake field goal pass and a successful onside kick.
In overtime, the Packers fell victim to the Seahawks, who had momentum and then won the coin toss.
McCarthy should not be second-guessed, nor should he feel his seat getting warm after this loss. In no way, shape or form was he out-coached, only the victim of playing against the defending Super Bowl champions in their building, getting some key pieces to fall into place at the perfect time … for them.
