Once rumored to be in line for a payday of upwards of $18 million per season, the San Francisco 49ers have now tabled contract extension talks with star quarterback Colin Kaepernick as Miami police continue to investigate a sex assault case involving the fourth-year veteran.

Earlier this month, a 25-year-old still unidentified woman told police she, Kaeperncik and two other NFL players later identified as teammate Quinton Patton and Seattle Seahawk Ricardo Lockette were drinking and smoking marijuana at the Viceroy Hotel and she awoke some time later to find herself in a hospital emergency room.

Several media have reported Kaepernick has since told investigators he had left the hotel by the time the ambulance that escorted the woman to the hospital arrived on the scene and police have yet to criminally charge anyone in connection with the case.

Still, the Niners apparently find it prudent to see how things play out before delving any deeper into talks with the 26-year-old Pro Bowl signal caller. ESPN reports investigators are now awaiting the results of a toxicology test performed on the alleged victim as well as the findings gleamed from other evidence taken from the residence on the night of the April 1 incident.

In recent days, Kaepernick has taken to Twitter to defend himself recently posting “I take great pride in who I am and what I do, but I guess sometimes you have to deal with someone who makes things up. All of the people who have shared their encouraging sentiments, I assure you that your faith is not misplaced.”

Over the last two seasons, Kaepernick has emerged as one of the Niners unquestioned leaders. He completed 58.4 percent of his passes last season for 3, 197 yards and 21 touchdowns. In leading the 49ers to within a Richard Sherman end zone interception of back-to-back Super Bowl appearances, Kaepernick also rushed for 528 yards and four more scores.
