The Cleveland Browns will inevitably draft a quarterback in the 2014 NFL Draft; the question remains is when.
According to Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon, the answer is simple. Gordon told FOX Sports Ohio that based on conversations with general manager Ray Farmer, the team will likely pick a quarter in the first round. Of course, that still doesn’t completely answer the question, as the Browns hold two picks — the third and 26th — in the first round.
“From talking with Ray Farmer, I’m still pretty sure we’re going to take a quarterback,” Gordon told FOX Sports Ohio Saturday. “I think whoever we get will be the best option for us. It’s such a deep draft class of quarterbacks and they’ve all had really great years. I feel that anybody we get will be able to make something happen.”
One quarterback the Browns are particularly high on is Derek Carr.
Yesterday, Carr proclaimed himself the best quarterback in the draft. According to sources, the Browns “really love” Carr and would be able to nab him with their second pick in the first round.
They love him. They really love him. The feeling with many in football is that Cleveland will take Carr with its 26th pick. Other quarterbacks are rising quickly, but he might be rising the fastest. He has charmed almost every team he’s met with and his arm and accuracy are underrated. And no one seems to be scared of the fact he’s related to epic draft bust David Carr, a notion that was definitely in play just a few months ago.
Michael Sam, too, is drawing a lot of interest. According to the Baltimore Sun, six teams have jumped to the forefront. Those teams: the Baltimore Ravens, Atlanta Falcons, New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, New York Jets, and Browns.
Sam is expected to come off the board between Rounds 5-7, and fits the mold of a 3-4 outside linebacker employed by all of the aforementioned teams. In terms of Sam’s publicity as the NFL’s potentially first openly gay player, organizations like Baltimore, New England, and Indianapolis seem to be ideal fits.
The Dallas Cowboys signed Henry Melton to anchor its defensive line, but the team remains in the hunt for young talent in the draft. Over the past week, the team has worked out Missouri’s Kony Ealy, Pittsburgh’s Aaron Donald, and Florida’s Dominique Easley.

The Cowboys lost top pass-rusher DeMarcus Ware, which is where Ealy fits. Ealy is projected to fall to Dallas at No. 16 per the XN Sports Mock Draft 2.0. Both Donald and Easley would provide the team with long-term options at defensive tackle, with Donald expected to be a first-round selection and Easley more likely a second-round pick.
