Dallas Stars at St. Louis Blues
Dallas kept their playoff hopes alive with a monster 7-2 win yesterday in Dallas over Nashville. Here’s one problem with that game: it was last night. The Stars have played five back-to-back situations in 2014 and have just one win in the second of those five games. The team has also scored just 11 goals in those five games. The offensive outburst last night was nice – even though Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin only combined for two assists – but it shouldn’t be expected tonight. Neither should a win for their goalie be on tap.
St. Louis stumbled a little bit with back to back losses a week ago but have since won three straight and outscored their competition 11-4 in those three games. David Backes scored a hat trick against Toronto on Tuesday and T.J. Oshie scored one of his own on Thursday. It would seem that the logical progression means Alex Steen gets one tonight. No, it’s not logical, and no he probably won’t get a hat trick. But that top line is firing on all cylinders right now. The team has also gone back to their traditional set up of having both Alex Pietrangelo and Kevin Shattenkirk on the top power play unit.
St. Louis is 2-0-1 against Dallas this year with 11 goals scored in those three games. With the Stars playing a back to back, I think St. Louis makes it 3-0-1. Doing a combo first line forward/top PP unit defenseman probably isn’t a bad play, though outright stacking the top line could be very profitable as well. I also don’t mind Ryan Miller in net for 50/50 games tonight.
