Detroit Red Wings at Toronto Maple Leafs
This is the biggest game of the weekend and perhaps the biggest game of the season for the Toronto Maple Leafs. These are two of the four teams fighting for the final two playoff spots in the East and with their regulation loss last night, the Leafs have two fewer games to play than the rest of them. To say tonight is a must-win (and in regulation) is an understatement.
Detroit has lost two games in regulation already this week and need to get some wins under their belt if they hope for a playoff spot. What they need most is goals from someone in the not-Gustav Nyquist category; the last game was the first in the team’s last six that Nyquist failed to score. He had been riding a high shooting rate so that’s likely to have subsided by now.
There have been lots of instances this year where Toronto has had a “show us what you’re made of” type of game. Games after ones where the team was blown out, for example. This game tonight is another one of those games. One problem is that the penalty kill has given up five goals in their last five games including two last night.
I don’t know which way this game goes because everything says Toronto should stomp the Red Wings, but it’s tough to stack a team that has lost seven straight games in regulation. I would rather just look for a value play or two and just leave the teams alone.
