San Jose Sharks at Colorado Avalanche
San Jose has had some mixed results lately, going 2-2-2 in their last six games. The weird thing about that is the team has seven power play goals for and just three against over that stretch. They are getting outscored at five on five consistently and that’s something that doesn’t happen very often to this team.
The team has seen Logan Couture go down a couple times in the last couple of games from blocked shots, even leaving one. If he should go through any issues, it would seem like Tyler Kennedy gets the call from the team’s bottom six. Kennedy even got a couple of shifts with the second line last game regardless.
Colorado is another team that has been on a bit of a slide lately, going 3-3-1 in their last seven games. Despite averaging three goals for per game in that stretch, they are playing .500 hockey. That is a clear indicator that the goaltending is a little bit of an issue right now. The thing is, two of those games were started by Reto Berra and J-S Giguere, and they combined for 11 goals against in two games. On the flip side, Semyon Varlamov has only allowed 13 in his past five games and has a .923 save percentage for the month.
These two teams have played each other twice this year and the Avs scored four goals in each game. I don’t know that I would stack them outright in this game, or that I would really trust Varlamov against the Sharks. In that sense, I’ll take a couple higher-priced skaters for my 50/50s and leave the rest alone.
