Phoenix Coyotes at Pittsburgh Penguins
Phoenix probably hadn’t planned on starting Mike Smith tonight, but if they had, he won’t be now.
The Coyotes’ Olympic goaltender left their game last night in New York with a lower-body injury. It was a result of him getting Derick Brassard falling on him. Smith’s right leg was bent underneath him and he had to be helped off the ice. The goaltending duties now fall on Thomas Greiss, and he has lost his last three outings. Greiss has had a pretty good year this year (.924 overall save percentage), but he has allowed nine goals in those three losses (one of them includes two goals in replacing Smith in the third period last night).
The Coyotes are just 1-3-0 in the second of back to back games this year, with the lone wing coming against the Florida Panthers.
If it was almost any other team, I might fade the Penguins tonight. Pittsburgh has gone just 2-3-1 in their last six games and the goal scoring spread is immense: in their two wins, the team has nine goals; in their four losses, the team has seven goals.
With that said, Pittsburgh should be able to handle Phoenix tonight. The Coyotes aren’t particularly good in back to backs and the team may be feeling a little demoralized today. I would be looking to stack the Penguins first line in some GPPs (they will be without Evgeni Malkin for a couple weeks at least).
