Toronto Maple Leafs at Detroit Red Wings
Toronto received the news that goalie Jonathan Bernier has a mild groin strain and is considered day-to-day at this point. This would put the next couple of games in the lap of James Reimer and that should be cause for concern for Leafs fans: Since January 1st, Reimer has managed just an .896 save percentage and the team has won just three of those ten games. The dynamic duo of Phil Kessel and James van Riemsdyk has also gone cold of late as Kessel is pointless in three straight games while JVR hasn’t scored in seven straight games.
Detroit is undoubtedly a banged up team right now as they are essentially missing their top four centres in Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, Darren Helm and Joakim Andersson. Todd Bertuzzi is a game-time decision, Justin Abdelkader is out for a couple of weeks and on and on it goes. In all, the Wings could be without 10 forwards tonight that would be regulars for them in the lineup. In short, this is a game that they absolutely should lose.
Note that I said *should* lose. Situations like this have a way of galvanizing a team. It simplifies the playbook and can produce blue collar efforts. As much as I want to say the Leafs should be a good stack tonight, I just can’t bring myself around to doing it. I’ll probably just stay away altogether from this game tonight.
