Toronto Maple Leafs at Anaheim Ducks
Of the three California games that the Leafs have coming up this week, this is the most winnable (which is weird considering that the Ducks are one point behind St. Louis for tops in the NHL). The Ducks play a game that relies on run-and-gun and high shooting percentages, much like the Maple Leafs. If the Leafs can out-Leaf the Ducks, they have a shot at winning this one. In fact, the Leafs beat the Ducks back in October 4-2 in a game where the Leafs only managed 23 shots on net. They did, in fact, out-Leaf Anaheim. They’ll need to do that again tonight.
Anaheim has grabbed four of a possible six points over their last three Eastern opponents that have come to town but two of those games were shootout losses. They outshot the opposition 73-48 in those games but gave up five goals against on the 48 shots. Goaltending has a way of fluctuating and if Jonas Hiller isn’t sharp tonight, the top line of Toronto could give him a really tough time.
This game seems like it should be lopsided at face value but it probably won’t shake out as such. I don’t like the prospects of either goalie tonight but the top lines should produce enough goals to make some of their players viable. Note: Toronto has given up a lot of short-handed goals lately so guys like Andrew Cogliano and Nick Bonino get an added boost for this one.
