Columbus Blue Jackets at Dallas Stars
Columbus has managed four wins in their last five contests with the lone blemish being a 6-1 thrashing to Chicago. One of those wins was a 4-2 win at home against Dallas. I wouldn’t read too much into that win, however, as the Blue Jackets were outshot 33-20 in that game so it could be chalked up to just a bad goalie outing. Outside of their 6-3 win over Florida, Columbus’ power play is just 1-for-15 since the Sochi break and it just so happens that the lone goal was in a 1-for-2 effort against the Stars.
Dallas has really found their stride offensively since the Olympics as they’ve scored 21 goals in six games while the power play has gone 6-for-19 in their last four games. The penalty killing has left something to be desired by giving up a goal against in three straight games, but part of that is due to Dallas having three different goalies play each of their last three games. Remember, goalie Kari Lehtonen was knocked out of a game (literally) from taking a charge in the crease so it’s up to newly-acquired Tim Thomas to lock things down in net now.
This game seems like a bit of a toss-up because I don’t have much faith in Thomas and Columbus has already beaten this team this month. The Stars are pretty heavy favorites in Vegas tonight (odds are getting over -150 on some books) so Thomas would seem to make a decent 50/50 play. I’m not buying into him whole heartedly for tonight so I would rather just pick at some value plays and leave the goalies alone.
