Phoenix Coyotes at Tampa Bay Lightning
A look over Phoenix’s last few games is a pretty good microcosm of their season: A few wins, a few losses, some games getting outshot, some games outshooting the other team. In other words, consistently average.
One aspect that has been outstanding of late is the power play. Over Phoenix’s last eight games, the power play has converted for nine goals (29-percent efficiency), and three goals in their last two games. This could come in handy tonight as Tampa Bay features a penalty kill that is in the bottom-third of the NHL.
The Lightning welcome back Steven Stamkos last week but without his running mate Martin St. Louis beside him, it hasn’t been the same (yet); Stamkos was a minus-3 with zero points in his first two games back. It’s going to take him some time to get used to not playing with St. Louis and that means Tampa’s offensive punch might be lacking for the next little while. Aside from a game against Buffalo, this team has been getting its face kicked in on the shot clock and that’s not a good sign for this team that had played so well all year.
These two teams met in Phoenix in November and the result was six goals for the Coyotes. Granted, that game featured Anders Lindback in net so it’s a little bit skewed. I wouldn’t be shy to use Mike Smith in GPPs tonight and as it has been for a few games now, Michael Stone remains the best value on defense.
