New York Rangers at Philadelphia Flyers
The Rangers won their first game out of the break 2-1 over the Blackhawks and even that is a bit misleading as the ‘Hawks scored with an empty net and time winding down. The Rangers looked good, not great, in that game but that’s kind of to be expected coming out of the break. The big bonus was that New York got to start Cam Talbot instead of Henrik Lundqvist so The King should be good and rested for this game. With Mats Zuccarello injured, J.T. Miller took his place on the third line and even got some power play time.
The Flyers got absolutely shelled in their first game back losing 7-3 to the Sharks and again, that score generously favours the Flyers. Steve Mason was pulled in that game and with Ray Emery now injured, he’s the one that’s going to get the start again tonight. The Flyers should get a big boost as Kimmo Timonen, who sat out Thursday’s game, should be back for this one. That should add a bit of mobility to a blue line that has the mobility of a Zack Morris phone.
The Rangers took the last game these two teams played in the middle of January 4-1 on the back of a 37-save performance from Henrik Lundqvist. I expect him to be just as sharp for this game.
In that last game, it was primarily the Derek Stepan line against the Claude Giroux line and the result was: out of three even-strength goals scored by New York, two of them were from the third and fourth line. Just FYI.
