Daily Fantasy Hockey DFS Value Update – March 1

Pittsburgh Penguins at Chicago Blackhawks

Of course the big game today is the outdoor game between Pittsburgh and Chicago at Soldier’s Field. I will just say this flat out: I never, ever, ever, ever bet on outdoor games. They are terrible conditions for hockey games and impossible to predict. If you want to put your money on a hockey game played outdoors while it’s snowing, be my guest. There are enough other games for me to fill out my rosters that I don’t need a crapshoot hockey game as well.

Calgary Flames at Edmonton Oilers

Calgary was shutout in their first game off the break 2-0 at home to Los Angeles. The lack of goals was a familiar sight for the team, even if they played well throughout the game. They do get Reto Berra back in goal tonight after having rookie Joni Ortio start the game against Los Angeles. The resurgent problem of scoring goals is back for Calgary, though, as going back to before the break, the Flames have scored just five goals in their last four games and four goals came in one of them. This team just does not have the depth in their lineup to score against most teams. Thankfully, they’re going up against the Edmonton Oilers and Ilya Bryzgalov.

Even though Calgary was shutout in their first game back, they still looked good in parts. Edmonton just looked flat in their 3-0 loss to Minnesota on Thursday night. Edmonton only managed (and to their credit, only allowed) 21 shots on goal in that game but what’s even more worrisome is the power play: after an 0-fer in that game against the Wild, Edmonton has now gone 17 straight power plays without converting for a goal. To make matters worse, one of the few good shots on that team is Nail Yakupov and he will be sidelined for tonight’s game with Ales Hemsky taking his spot on the top line.

This will be the fourth game this year between the two teams with each side taking games in the other’s barn. I am weary of using Edmonton heavily in my lineups but with so few really good stacking options today I may be tempted to do just that. Having Ilya Bryzgalov in net for the Oilers is a huge concern though so I might not stack players outside of maybe one GPP.
