New Jersey Devils vs. New York Islanders
The Devils’ first game out of the break was a very positive one for them as they outshot the Columbus Blue Jackets 35-19 and won 5-2. Like a lot of teams, New Jersey’s power play looked great out of the gate and finished that game 2-for-3. Today’s game should be a little different though as Martin Brodeur is expected to get the start in goal for the Devils and he hasn’t played a game since the last week of January. One interesting thing about that Devils power play is this: They ended up using Jon Merrill on the first unit over Eric Gelinas after Gelinas started the game on the top unit.
The Islanders managed to take a 5-4 overtime win from the Toronto Maple Leafs in their first game but needed a couple of short-handed goals and one goal that probably should have been blown dead but wasn’t. In short, even though they hemmed Toronto in for good chunks of the game, they probably didn’t deserve to win it. The biggest take away from that game is that Michael Grabner appeared to have brought the momentum with him from Sochi as he was responsible for those two short-handed goals.
The only time this year that the Devils have played against the Islanders resulted in a 4-3 shootout loss. The other game was a 2-1 win with Schneider in net. I would expect this one to be higher scoring than expected and will be taking value plays from both sides to help balance out my different 50/50 lineups. Goalie Evgeni Nabokov might not be a bad play in net for GPPs either.
