Los Angeles Kings at Colorado Avalanche
Los Angeles was one of the teams that desperately needed a break (though they did have guys like Jon Quick, Drew Doughty, Slava Voynov, Jeff Carter and Dustin Brown in Sochi) as they had gone 2-8-0 in their 10 games heading into the break and couldn’t score a goal to save their lives. It had gotten so bad that the Buffalo Sabres are the only team with a lower shooting percentage on the season at five on five. Also, the Florida Panthers are the only team with a lower power play conversion rate than the Kings on the season. It’s been tough times for the Western Conference finalists from a year ago.
Colorado received news over the break that Alex Tanguay is done for the season with a hip injury and as sad as it is to say, perhaps we never see him in an NHL uniform again. What that does do in fantasy though is open up time for Jamie McGinn to stay on the top power play unit.
Already confirmed in net tonight for Colorado is Jean-Sébastien Giguere and he’s been adequate in relief of Semyon Varlamov so far this season. Jonathan Quick still has not been named starter for tonight’s game so it could very well end up being like the situation in Montréal where the Kings start their back-up in their first game back.
This game is tough to project because of so many Olympians on both sides but in this instance, I’ll lean on the home team. I won’t be stacking Colorado players per se, but McGinn (among others) should make solid cash game plays.
