Detroit Red Wings at Philadelphia Flyers
Today will be the fifth game this year that the Detroit Red Wings have played without both Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg. Without them in the lineup, the Wings have one win in four games this year. On top of that, goaltender Jimmy Howard is not available again. This is a team that is limping into Philadelphia, probably not a place you want to limp in to. This team has also given up five power play goals against in their last five games and will be missing two of their best penalty killers. These are all bad signs for Wings fans tonight.
The Flyers have lost four straight games and are 5-6-2 so far in the month of January. Goals against has been their biggest problem, allowing at least three goals against in nine straight games (37 in total in that stretch). Their penalty kill has been horrendous of late as it’s rolling along at a 77.5-percent efficiency in those nine games. It wouldn’t be so bad if they weren’t averaging over four power plays against per game in those nine contests, essentially putting them down 1-0 every game before it starts.
This is the third meeting this year between the two teams with each team winning a game and scoring eight total goals in the two contests. In short, these have been high-scoring games all year long and there are no indicators to say that this should be any different.
I do expect Philadelphia to take this one tonight though don’t be surprised if Detroit posts a few goals against this horrific defense and goaltending. I do, however, like the idea of streaming the Flyers skaters almost at will tonight.
