Tampa Bay Lightning at Toronto Maple Leafs
Tampa Bay is quietly having a very good month, posting an 8-4-1 record so far in January. Even better news is that Steven Stamkos will be traveling with the team on this road trip for the next week. That would seem to indicate that he’s close to returning. Aside from that, the top line of Martin St. Louis, Tyler Johnson and Ondrej Palat has been lighting it up lately with the first two on that list posting a hat trick apiece in the last 10 days. The Lightning are averaging three goals against in their last four games, though, so there are some cracks starting to show in the Ben Bishop shield.
After a six-game winning streak, the Leafs have now lost back-to-back games, allowing 12 goals against in the process. The Leafs have been outshot in nine of their 11 games this month and in some games by A LOT (six of those 11 games, they were outshot by at least 10 shots). Conversely, the Leafs have under 30 shots on goal in four of their last five games. This sort of trend says that the Leafs are in for a big downturn and this may have been the start of it. On the bright side, the top line in Toronto is still rolling along so there is value here in the right spot.
Somehow, it’s their first game of the season against each other even though these two teams are in the same division. Toronto always scares me when they play at home (they are 17-10-1 at home, after all) so I’m not very high on Ben Bishop tonight.
With that said, this could be a very high-scoring game: these two teams have scored 31 goals between them in their last four games each respectively, so both offenses are primed for a game like this. Stream the skaters, avoid the goalies.
