Chicago Blackhawks at Calgary Flames
Chicago has lost three games in a row to some middling teams (Detroit, Minnesota, Winnipeg) but their team points tally doesn’t really reflect the slide they’ve been on because they have five overtime/shootout losses this month (and four wins). They are outshooting their opponents by a margin of six per game as an average for the month of January, and that’s a lot considering they have just those four wins. Essentially, this is a team with consistently average goaltending and that puts pressure on the offense to score three or four goals every night.
Calgary has won back-to-back games for the first time in a month and a half and they even scored four goals on Friday night for just the third time in over two months. There’s nothing spectacular going on here; they aren’t outshooting teams by wide margins and they aren’t consistently scoring on the power play. Teams can’t lose every single game they play so they’re bound to get the bounces once in a while. Defenseman Mark Giordano just keeps producing, though, as he has points in six straight games (three goals, three assists) and is getting loads of ice time. We’ll see how that translates tonight.
This is the third meeting this year between Chicago and Calgary with each team taking a game 3-2 in the other team’s barn. Chicago has averaged outshooting Calgary by 11 in those games but sometimes teams “get up” for games (like Calgary would tonight) while other teams do not (it has to be hard to get up for a game in Calgary on a Tuesday night).
Avoiding both goalies in this game is probably a smart idea but if you like to live dangerously, Reto Berra could create some separation for you in GPPs.
