Colorado Avalanche at Dallas Stars
The Avalanche just keep rolling along but the imperfections are starting to show up a bit in their armor; this team has been outshot in five of their previous seven games and that averages out to being outshot by five a game. That’s not a recipe for success for any team. Of this team’s previous eight wins, seven of them have been by one goal and the eighth was a 4-2 game. You don’t need to blow out every opponent, but a pile of close games is indicative of a team that is probably getting a bit lucky. That’s a big worry in DFS (especially in plus/minus terms).
After losing six straight games in regulation to start 2014, the Stars have gone 4-2-1 in their last seven games, including three straight wins by a combined score of 14-1. One big help has been a power play that was among the bottom-feeders in the NHL for most of the year but has gone 9-for-24 in their last seven games (37.5-percent). Since being reunited two games ago the line of Jamie Benn–Tyler Seguin–Valeri Nichushkin has half of Dallas’ eight even strength goals and have been a big part of the resurgent power play.
Dallas has lost three of the four meetings this year against the Avalanche, though their games in Dallas were both 3-2 games (one a win for the Stars, one an overtime loss). In short, these are two pretty evenly-matched teams and both are playing pretty good hockey of late.
Because of how close these two teams are, I will probably avoid both goaltenders and focus on Dallas’ power play studs for the most part. I would be a bit wary of Colorado players tonight as Dallas goalie Kari Lehtonen has allowed just one goal against in his last three starts. Goalies get on hot streaks (Bobrovsky and Miller are great examples) that can single-handedly shutdown the other team. This is probably one of those streaks.
