Daily Fantasy Hockey DFS Value Update – January 23

Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Islanders

The Penguins are on the road after a 5-1 dismantling of the Canadiens last night. Pittsburgh had a bit of a hiccup earlier in the week against Florida but looked just fine last night. More good news was that their power play broke out of their slump, going 2-for-5 against what has been a very good Habs penalty kill so far this year. That bodes well for tonight, as they visit an Islanders team that is last in the NHL in penalty kill efficiency.

The Islanders are coming off a win of their own, a comeback victory over the Rangers on Tuesday night. That win brought their record since Christmas to 10-3 and they have scored at least three goals in nine of those 13 games and have 16 goals in five home games since Christmas. Beyond the top line of Okposo-Tavares-Vanek, some depth guys like Frans Nielsen, Calvin de Haan and Thomas Hickey have had good games of late. Of course, no team wins without stellar goaltending and Kevin Poulin has at least stabilized things in net: Poulin is averaging 2.77 goals against/game since Christmas, but that’s about a half-goal less than Islanders goaltending up to that point in the season. Those half-goals add up quick.

For two teams that score a lot of goals, there were only 19 goals between them in their three previous meetings this year. While that is more than an average game, that’s lower than what is probably expected. Neither goalie makes a great play in this game but there is value to be had on both sides (and not just the big ticket guys either).
