Boston Bruins at San Jose Sharks
The Bruins finish off their California road trip tonight in San Jose, having lost the first two to Anaheim and Los Angeles by a combined score of 9-4. A big problem for them has been the penalty killing which allowed four goals on nine chances in those two contests. Their own power play has gone goalless in four straight games and this is a team that can ill afford to give away opportunities to score.
San Jose has obviously been pretty good but there are some signs of concern here: the Sharks have just six regulation wins in their last 19 games but have managed four shootout wins in the meantime. Typically, teams that are relying on shootout wins to gain their points – ahem, Toronto and Washington – are struggling a bit underneath. Not to say San Jose is bad by any stretch, but they’re not as good as people make them out to be.
Boston is looking to avoid their first three game losing streak of the season and I think they’ll “get up” to play this game. No team wants to go on a three-game road trip and lose all three games, particularly a team with Stanley Cup aspirations.
This is a tossup game for me as I could see either team winning. That means I will be avoiding both goalies and just picking at their value plays.
