Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Islanders
Tampa has had a weird start to the month. They are just 1-2-1 on the road in December, but have only allowed two goals against on average each game. They were shutout in two of those contests, and a lack of goal scoring is something that has marred this team since Steven Stamkos went down: Tampa Bay has 34 goals in 16 games without him. In the games Stamkos was dressed, they scored at least four goals six separate times in those 17 games. Without Stamkos, they have scored at least four goals just three times in 16 games.
The Islanders just keep losing games; they’re now 1-5-3 in nine games since Thanksgiving and are now just seven points clear of Buffalo for “worst team in the league” status.
There might be some hope with the return of Evgeni Nabokov – he did carry a shutout into overtime in his last start – but keep in mind he’s been a below-average goalie for years now.
There is quite a bit of uncertainty around this game, and I’d actually be more inclined to take Islanders players than Lightning players, but certainly both goalies are to be avoided.
