We are heading into the last weekend of baseball before the All-Star break so there are only a couple more chances to build a Star Fantasy Leagues daily lineup before taking a few days off. In putting my team together today, I’ve opted for value pitching and good hitting. I think my money is best spent on offense. So this is what I’ve come up with. (C) Victor Martinez $5,998 – Martinez had three more hits last night, marking the 13th straight game in which he’s had at least one. He’s now gotten his average up to .260 on the season after a very slow start. In three plate appearances against tonight’s opposing starter, Justin Grimm, he has a walk and a double.
(1B) David Ortiz $9,418 – Ortiz is enjoying a nice west coast road trip, reaching base in six of seven games. He has 10 hits in those games with eight runs, six RBI, and six extra base hits.
(2B) Brock Holt $6,199 – While playing third base for the Red Sox since being called up from Triple-A last week, he gets the start at second base in my lineup. He has played in six games since his promotion and has hits in his last five and is hitting .316. He also has five RBI and three runs in those six games.
(3B) Miguel Cabrera $11,754 – With his home run last night, Cabrera has become the first player ever to have 30 home runs and 90 RBI before the All-Star break. He has scored a run in six straight game, which includes four home runs and eight RBI. Six more before the weekend ends and he will have 100 RBI before the All-Star break. That’s insane.
(SS) Brad Miller $6,637 – Miller has played in 13 games for the Mariners and is hitting .286 with seven RBI and seven runs. He has eight hits in his last four games alone.
(OF) Mike Trout $9,568 – Trout has gotten better each month this season and is hitting .379 in July. In his last game on Wednesday, he had three hits, with two doubles and two runs. He is working on a seven-game hitting streak.
(OF) Josh Hamilton $7,267 – Hamilton’s 12-game hitting streak came to an end on Tuesday, but he came right back on Wednesday with two home runs and five RBI. He is now hitting .290 in July, which is by far his best month of the season.
(OF) Jayson Werth $7,723 – Werth has hit safely in his last eight games and is hitting .538 during that stretch. He also has two home runs in his last three games.
(U) Justin Upton $7,415 – After a long drought, Upton seems to have turned things around. In July, he is hitting .318 and he picked up his third three-hit game of the month last night. Since Monday, he has eight hits, five doubles and a home run.
(SP) Jonathan Pettibone $10,192 – In his last four starts, Pettibone has either a win or quality start, three of which came against teams with records above .500. Tonight, he’ll face the Chicago White Sox who have one of the worst offenses in baseball.
(SP) Tom Gorzelanny $7,899 – Gorzellanny is getting another spot start for Milwaukee and, if it’s anything like his last one, it will be good. He picked up the loss on Sunday against the Mets, but went six innings, allowing just two unearned runs and striking out eight. He has spent most of this season working out of the bullpen and has a 2.12 ERA and 8.9 K/9 rate on the year.
(RP) Joaquin Benoit $1,799 – The Tigers may finally have some relative stability at closer. Benoit hasn’t blown a save in eight chances. They haven’t all been clean appearances, but he finds ways to get the job done. He’s only pitched once since Monday, so he should be good to go.
(P) Chad Gaudin $8,000 – After missing two weeks with a right elbow contusion, Gaudin made a statement when he returned to the rotation on Sunday. He went seven innings, allowing just four hits, one walk, and one run, while striking out nine. His Giants have also won their last three games against the Padres.
