There are plenty of new injuries to wade through today as the Red Sox closer job is suddenly on the market, Hanley Ramirez and Joel Hanrahan make a quick return to the DL, and Roy Halladay tries to find anything to blame his horrific pitching on. Let’s take a look at who’s in and who’s out in this week’s injury report.
Andrew Bailey (biceps): Bailey has been placed on the DL with inflammation in his biceps leaving the Red Sox’ ninth-inning spot up in the air. He hadn’t played in a week before being placed on the DL and could return soon.
Joel Hanrahan (forearm): Hanrahan finally reclaimed the Sox closer job with Andrew Bailey hurt but had to leave Monday’s game after allowing a home run with forearm tightness and may need yet another DL stint. Koji Uehara probably makes the most sense to close games after saving 13 games for the Orioles in 2010 but Craig Breslow (six career saves) or even Junichi Tazawa (one career save) could get a look.
Adam Eaton (elbow): Eaton has already begun his rehab assignment two weeks ahead of schedule and could be back with the DBacks within a couple of weeks.
Jayson Heyward (appendectomy): While there’s still no timetable for his return, he could begin a minor league rehab assignment by the end of this week which means he could be back sooner than many feared.
Chris Davis (knee): Davis underwent an MRI that showed tendinosis and while his knee is still sore he should be able to play on Tuesday vs. the Royals.
Kyuji Fujikawa (forearm): The Cubs’ closer is expected to make one more rehab start this week and will be called up shortly after that. It’s unclear if he will resume closing immediately since Kevin Gregg has done really well in his place and has yet to allow a run in seven appearances this season.
Gavin Floyd (elbow): Floyd will undergo reconstructive elbow surgery and will be out 14-to-19 months.
Jake Peavy (back): After being scratched from his Monday start, Peavy is expected to start Wednesday against the Mets.
Michael Bourn (finger): Bourn will play a few games at Triple-A this week and is expected to return before the weekend.
Mark Ellis (quad): After not having played since April 26, the Dodgers finally put Ellis on the DL. Ellis isn’t expected to miss much more time than he already has.
Hanley Ramirez (hamstring): The wheels are starting to come off for Hanley who managed just four games before landing right back on the DL in Brian Roberts-esque fashion. His injury is similar to the one Giancarlo Stanton suffered. Definitely pick up Dee Gordon while Hanley is out.
Coco Crisp (hamstring): Crisp was placed on the 15-day DL with a strained hamstring but isn’t expected to miss more than a couple of weeks.
Chris Young (quad): Young was placed on the 15-day DL with a quadriceps injury and it’s unclear how long he will be out. Look for Seth Smith and Michael Taylor to play more in Crisp and Young’s absence.
Roy Halladay (shoulder): The Phils placed Doc on the DL with shoulder inflammation which they certainly hope is the reason he allowed nine runs and four walks to the worst offense in the league Sunday against the Marlins.
Francisco Liriano (arm): Liriano is fully recovered from his broken arm and will start Saturday vs. the Mets.
Clayton Richard (illness): The Padres have placed Richard on the DL to give him time to recover from an intestinal virus that has caused him to drop 12 pounds.
Angel Pagan (hamstring): Pagan hasn’t played since Saturday with a sore hamstring but hopes to start on Tuesday against the Phillies.
Jason Motte (elbow): Motte underwent Tommy John Surgery and could miss the start of next season.
Matt Adams (oblique): Adams is expected to return to the Cards on Tuesday and remain in his part-time role for the foreseeable future.
Jayson Werth (hamstring): Werth has been out with a sore hamstring since last Thursday but hopes to start on Tuesday vs. the Tigers.
