Fantasy Hockey Sleepers for Week 9

Calgary Flames left wing Curtis Glencross

Each fantasy season is full of injuries and players that just don’t meet your expectations. Being able to adjust on the fly and find studs on your league’s waiver wire is critical in a short season. Here are five players owned in less than 30% of Yahoo leagues who can help your team:

Curtis Glencross (15%):  He has been on an absolute tear as of late, scoring four goals and adding an assist in his last two games. His entire line (with Matt Stajan and Lee Stempniak) has been clicking. Glencross has been good for 20+ goals a season dating back to the 2010-11 season. With 12 goals so far this season, he might surpass 20 goals again in a lockout-shortened season. Use him while he’s hot.

Brandon Saad (11%):  Similar to how rookie Beau Bennett found himself alongside Evgeni Malkin and James Neal, Saad is playing left wing on a line with Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa. Not bad company there. He has responded by scoring 10 points in his last eight games.

Devin Setoguchi (9%):  Once upon a time, Devin Setoguchi was a must-own in fantasy circles like every other 30-goal scorer. He hasn’t come close to matching his 65 point season in 2008-09, but he’s still a capable scorer. He’s found his scoring touch recently, scoring four goals and an assist in his last three games.

Shawn Horcoff (2%):  The Edmonton Oilers have a surplus of talented forwards on their roster, but it hasn’t translated to goals. Since Horcoff has returned to the lineup on Mar. 10, he has registered a point in all three games. He plays on the top power play unit and 5-on-5 with Taylor Hall, so the scoring chances will keep on coming.

Shawn Matthias (1%):  While the Miami Heat can’t seem to lose, the Florida Panthers can’t seem to win. One of the few things going for them has been the play of Matthias, who’s really stepped up his game with Stephen Weiss done for the season. Matthias has five points in his last seven games, and has a plus/minus of +3 – an impressive feat when you factor in the Panthers have gone 1-5-1 in those games.

Last Week’s Picks:

Derek Stepan had a three game point streak snapped yesterday against Pittsburgh. Adam Henrique broke out with two goals and an assist vs. the Flyers on Mar. 13. It might be time to move on from Clarke MacArthurhe’s gone scoreless in his last 3 games, and now Joffrey Lupul took his spot alongside Nazem Kadri. The jury’s still out on Colin Wilson, as the Predators’ leading scorer has been placed on injured reserve with an upper body injury. No Evgeni Malkin, no problem for Pittsburgh’s Beau Bennett. He still managed to tally a goal and an assist through Saturday’s games, proving he’s not just riding Malkin’s coattails.
