The wicked powers of the news media never seem to cease. To wit, Roddy White is lashing out at the industry as a whole for what he presumably, personally posted on his own Twitter page on Friday concerning the yet growing Adrian Peterson child abuse probe.
No matter what side of the ball you stand on in the simmering debate of whether or not All Day deserved to be publicly vilified, indicted as a felon, and actually arrested for “whooping” his four-year-old son as a form of discipline, we can all agree that the Atlanta Falcons star wideout seemed to be trivializing the issue as a whole when he also expressed “I’m probably going to lose my fantasy football matchup this week cause All Day can’t play Sunday for disciplining his child. Jesus help us.”
Yet in the aftermath of it all and the face of the added firestorm it has created, Roddy White would have you believe it’s the evil, foreboding media that has somehow put him in the position he now finds himself and not the insensitive views he, himself freely elected to pen and espouse to his thousands of followers.
“You guys are complete assholes,” White later wrote in direct response to ProFootballTalk.com’s headline of “Roddy White thinks his fantasy team is the real victim of the Adrian Peterson case.”
Suffice it to say, many in the social media universe also took exception with White’s views, to the point the four-time Pro Bowler later removed the tweet from his page and further took to his social platforms to apologize “I should not have made light of a very serious situation. I understand the strong feelings about this issue and I shouldn’t have said that.”
In a week where not just the NFL but all of Sports Nation has taken a beating, from the well documented shortcomings of Ray Rice to Bruce Levenson to Roger Goodell to Danny Ferry, to Oscar Pistorius to Floyd Mayweather, White’s words keep the ball rolling in the wrong direction, cast all the attention in an area sports would rather not have fans predisposed.
Roddy White’s uncivilized views came at the most inopportune moment and have put him squarely in the crosshairs with all those aforementioned others at the in the worst possible time. And the media didn’t have a thing to do with it.
