For the last couple of weeks when building my Star Fantasy Leagues daily lineup, I have been going after pitchers with high strikeout rates and taking chances with low-cost players. It worked from time to time, but I wasn’t getting as much consistent production from my offense that I’d like. So I’m spending a little bit more money on my hitters now in the hopes they’ll bring me some big points. (C) Welington Castillo $4,706 – Castillo has hits in three straight games and is batting .278. He’ll face Mat Latos tonight, and he is 3-for-3 against him in his career.
(1B) Justin Morneau $6,738 – This isn’t the Morneau of old, but he’s hitting .292 this month with six home runs already, with four in the last week alone.
(2B) Brian Dozier $6,452 – Dozier has a six-game hitting streak and is batting .304 in his last 18 games. He’s also coming off a two-hit game last night, which included a home run.
(3B) Miguel Cabrera $11,720 – He has home runs in four of five games and had two on consecutive pitches against Mariano Rivera. What more needs to be said?
(SS) Alexei Ramirez $6,149 – Ramirez has an eight-game hitting streak and is pretty successful against tonight’s starter Doug Fister. In 19 career at bats, he has six hits.
(OF) Adam Jones $8,429 – Jones is working on a nine-game hitting streak and is batting .472 this month. He had a big home run yesterday as part of a two-hit day.
(OF) Alex Gordon $6,993 – Gordon is coming off a three-hit day, that included a double and a home run. He has hits in four of his last five games and a home run in three of five.
(OF) Nate McLouth $6,775 – This is a pick based more on upside than recent results. He has a hit in five straight games, but it’s only been one in each. But, he’s been consistent and all it takes is for one or two more to fall in.
(U) Erick Aybar $6,485 – Aybar went hitless yesterday, but that was only the second time he had done that in 12 games. He’s hitting .285 on the year and .342 in August.
(SP) Julio Teheran $14,126 – Teheran has only lost once since June 21 and has allowed more than three earned runs only once since June 10. He has 121 strikeouts in 137 innings this season. He has a nice matchup tonight against the Phillies.
(SP) Ricky Nolasco $11,542 – It seems like the Dodgers can do no wrong these days, so I’m happy taking their starter tonight. In his six starts since joining L.A., he is 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA. He should be pretty good against the Mets.
(RP) Joaquin Benoit $2,022 – The Tigers are as hot as any team not named the Atlanta Braves these days, so it would only make sense that their closer would get an opportunity for a save.
(P) Wade Davis $7,730 – Davis picked up his first win in more than a month two starts ago when he went 7.1 scoreless innings against the White Sox. He followed that up with a five-inning, two run performance against the Mets on August 2nd. He hasn’t pitched since then due to a death in the family, so he is coming off extra rest.
