Running Back
Terry Swanson, Toledo $4,400
Toledo’s lead back, Kareem Hunt, is one of the best runners in the country this season, but he could miss this weekend’s game against the Cyclones. Keep an eye on the situation, but considering that Toledo has a bye next week, it would be wise to hold Hunt out for one more week. Should Hunt miss the game this weekend, Swanson becomes a value at $4,400. Last week, he ran for 172 yards and a touchdown and caught three passes for 54 yards. Toledo takes on Iowa State this weekend, who allow more than 207 yards per game on the ground. In addition, the Cyclones have given up 18 rushing touchdowns in just five games. At $4,400, a feature back with a plus matchup is hard to find.
Samaje Perine, Oklahoma $6,000
Perine’s price escalated last week, and for good reason, after he rushed for three touchdowns on the 18th-ranked rush defense in the country in TCU. With starting running back Keith Ford ruled out for this weekend, Perine will again carry the load for Oklahoma. In the two games as the lead back, Perine has rushed for seven touchdowns and totaled just under 80 fantasy points. This week some may think of Texas as a tough matchup, while it’s the opposite. The Longhorns are allowing 199 yards per game on the ground, and have not faced a rushing attack even close to Oklahoma’s. Perine will lead the way, and be the featured part of the Sooners offense. A good bargain for $6,000.
Mario Pender, Florida State $3,000
Florida State’s starting running back Karlos Williams is likely to miss this weekend’s matchup against Syracuse, per a report by the Orlando Sentinel. Next in like is Pender, who is surprisingly priced at the minimum on DraftKings this weekend. Anytime you can land a starting option for the minimum price, it’s a value but consider Pender as the closest thing to a “must-play” this weekend as the ‘Noles take on Syracuse. The Orange have allowed just 3.2 yards per carry this season, but have not faced a rushing attack like Florida State, who is full with NFL-bound offensive linemen. With Pender likely to receive the bulk of the carries, he’s an excellent play in your lineup this weekend.
Wide Receiver
Mike Williams, Clemson $5,700
Since starting quarterback Deshaun Watson has taken over, Williams has been as impressive as any wide receiver in the country. In the last two games, he has 12 catches for 277 yards and four touchdowns. In each of the last two, he’s had six catches and two touchdowns. Even before Watson became the starter, Williams was able in eclipse 70 yards in each game. At $5,700, there are not many number one options at receiver, and that is exactly what Williams is with Watson at the helm. This week, Clemson faces Louisville, who has been nothing short of impressive defensively this season, intercepting 12 passes and allowing under 175 yards per game through the air. But, the Cardinals have had a relatively soft schedule to this point, and Clemson’s offense is among the most explosive in the country, so the matchup is not a worry.
Keevan Lucas, Tulsa $6,900
Lucas has been the focal point of the Tulsa passing game all season long, and has averaged the fourth-most points at wide receiver among those playing this weekend. But his price is $6,900, which is only the 11th-highest on DraftKings. Why is that? Tulsa will face Temple this weekend, who boast the third-best pass defense in the nation, holding opposing offenses to under 125 yards per game through the air. Read beyond the statistics, as Temple’s secondary has only seen 92 pass attempts in four games. Only 46 passes have been completed against Temple this season, so it’s no wonder than the Owls have such a “good” pass defense. Lucas has 44 catches by himself this season and the Tulsa passing attack boasts a lot more talent than what Temple has faced thus far in Vanderbilt, Navy, Delaware State, and Connecticut. For those who just look at Temple’s defensive rank, Lucas will be a suggested fade, but be the contrarian in this case because Temple’s defense is not as dominant as the numbers suggest so far.
