At 39-51, losers of four straight and sitting in last place in the American League East, the Boston Red Sox may be heading toward a fire sale of sorts. They have already designated A.J. Pierzynski for assignment.

Perhaps the first trade piece the defending champions will look to move is starting pitcher Jake Peavy.

Both the St. Louis Cardinals and the Los Angeles Angels have been mentioned as potential landing spots for the 33-year-old Peavy, who is 1-7 with a 4.64 ERA and has taken the loss in nine of his last 10 starts. Michael Wacha and Jaime Garcia are on the disabled list for the Cardinals, and it’s a similar story for the Angels, who seemingly have some concerns about Jered Weaver‘s health. Last year St. Louis made a push to acquire Peavy, too, and has had scouts in the bleachers watching him of late. There is a belief that the Red Sox covet some of the Cardinals’ outfielders, most notably  Stephen Piscotty, Randal Grichuk and Allen Craig. Boston may not be done dealing after Peavy either. FOX Sports believes the Red Sox could deal some of their relief pitchers such as Koji Uehara, Andrew Miller or Burke Badenhop. The Los Angeles Dodgers could have interest in working out a deal.

Of course, when the Dodgers are involved there could be some speculation of their outfielders could be in play. Over the past few months, both Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp have been mentioned in trade talks with the Red Sox.
