Last month, it was reported that cornerback Brandon Flowers was running out of time in Kansas City. On Friday, the Chiefs released him.

One team that could be in the hunt for Flowers is the Atlanta Falcons. According to the NFL Media insider Ian Rapoport, the team has been monitoring Flowers’ situation with the Chiefs in anticipation he would be cut.

The Falcons are a logical landing spot for Flowers, who turned 28 this winter and graded out as the No. 87 corner in 2013 by Pro Football Focus. Flowers struggled mightily in new defensive coordinator Bob Sutton’s scheme, and has been a candidate for trade or release much of the offseason.

Flowers was selected when Herm Edwards was the Chiefs’ head coach and was running a Tampa 2 defense in 2008.

Atlanta’s assistant GM Scott Pioli was part of the Chiefs’ front office when they drafted Flowers out of Virginia Tech. The Falcons need depth behind second-year player Desmond Trufant and Robert Alford.

Other potential destinations include the Houston Texans and first-year defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel. Crennel was the defensive coordinator in Kansas City when Flowers was enjoying some of his best seasons as a pro. The Texans lack depth at corner behind Johnathan Joseph and Kareem Jackson.

The Carolina Panthers, Detroit Lions, New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers, and Oakland Raiders also make sense, according to NFL.com.

Carolina lost Captain Munnerlyn this offseason. The Jets swung and missed on top free-agent corner Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Detroit cut Chris Houston on Friday, while the Niners are known for taking on veteran players.

Similarly, the Raiders have been trying to reassemble their defense with veteran players like LaMarr Woodley and Justin Tuck. They need help at corner.
