New York Rangers at Montreal Canadiens
The Rangers are already locked in the #2 slot in the Metro division so they, too, are a team with nothing left to play for. Thankfully, this game (and most teams after) will have a morning skate so there should be a good idea of who will play and who will sit by about noon time.
This is the final game of the year for the Rangers so I do wonder what the lineup will look like. The coach has to balance giving rest with taking this team out of its rhythm (9-2-1 in their last 11 games). Regardless of who gets the nod in the lineup, the team’s penalty killing has been something that has really come around of late, posting an 88.9-percent efficiency over those last 11 games. To be safe, I’d target their third line mostly.
Montreal is also playing their last game of the season tonight but they have a little more to play for than the Rangers: With at least a point tonight, the Habs put pressure on Tampa Bay to get at least one or else the Habs take 2nd place in the division and home ice advantage in the first round. One thing that is probably smart to not rely on, especially given the Rangers power play, is the Habs’ power play which has converted zero goals in their previous seven games.
Each team has shut out the other in the two games played so far this year between them and there were just three total goals scored in those two games. Whatever happens tonight, I don’t expect a lot of goals so I would avoid the goalies and focus on cheap skaters for 50/50s.
