Philadelphia Flyers at Pittsburgh Penguins
The Flyers are one of the few teams today that have something to play for. With the team sitting at 91 points, they are tied in points with both Detroit and Columbus. While the Flyers hold the tiebreaker, a loss would put them in a position to likely face either Boston or Pittsburgh in the first round (and who knows, maybe they want to get Pittsburgh). I expect a playoff-like effort from the Flyers in this game.
The Flyers have been on a bit of a slide of late, going 3-5-2 in their last 10 games overall (and the three wins were Buffalo, Florida, and Toronto). The team has scored just 24 goals in those 10 games and 14 of those 24 goals came in their three wins. One thing the team has done well in this stretch is penalty kill, as their PK units have combined for an 86.2-percent efficiency.
Pittsburgh is still without Evgeni Malkin and considering this team has absolutely nothing to play for as far as seeding is concerned, I’m thinking there will be some players sat in this game; the Pens have a game on Sunday against Ottawa and that will probably be a bit less intense than their inter-state rivals. This is another game where we won’t know what the lineup looks like until about 30 minutes before game time, so relying on some of the Pittsbugh stars is a very risky proposition.
The Flyers have something to play for, the Penguins do not and Pittsburgh may be sitting some players. I’m leaning Philly in this one, both in net and with their skaters (for 50/50 games).
