Former No. 3 overall pick Dion Jordan has yet to make an impact on the NFL stage yet, but that hasn’t stopped his former college coach Chip Kelly from trying to bring him to the Philadelphia Eagles.
According to the Delaware County Times, the Eagles “made an offer” to the Miami Dolphins for Jordan earlier in the offseason. The report cites a “highly respected NFL source” who said the Eagles dangled former first-round pick Brandon Graham and second-round pick in the 2014 draft.
Jordan thrived under the coaching of Kelly while at Oregon, when he switched from the tight end position to defensive end. In his first season on defense, he racked up 33 tackles and a pair of sacks. In 2011 as a full-time starter, he earned first-team All-Pac-12 Conference honors after registering 42 tackles, 13 for loss, and 7.5 sacks. He earned all-conference a second straight year in 2012, when he recorded 44 tackles, 10.5 for loss, and five sacks en route to being the third overall pick in the draft to the Dolphins.
In his first season in the NFL, Jordan didn’t have much of an impact. He finished the year with 19 tackles and two sacks.
Despite the low numbers, the report states the Dolphins remain intent on keeping Jordan, as the team will make an effort to get him more involved this upcoming season.
Financially, the swap would be difficult to come by. Miami would take a $10 million salary cap hit if they traded Jordan away prior to May’s draft, while if the team did so after June 1, it would be able to spread the cap hit over a two-year span.
The Eagles would be on the hook for the rest of Jordan’s four-year, $20.572 million guaranteed contract.
Outside linebacker/defensive end is one of the Eagles’ main needs in the draft. In the XN Sports Mock Draft 2.0, they are projected to nab edge rusher Dee Ford out of Auburn with the 22nd overall pick. That is if the team is unable to pull off a deal for Jordan.
