Tampa Bay Lightning at Detroit Red Wings
The Lightning are on one heck of a run right now, taking points out of their last 11 games and going 7-4-4 in that stretch. The competition hasn’t been that tough (Boston, Phoenix, Pittsburgh their toughest three games) but they have done well to fill the net regularly. One reason for the exceptional streak is that their power play is 11-for-39 in those games (28.2-percen). They have also have not given up a power play goal against in their last three games after allowing six in the eight games before that. Goaltender Ben Bishop still hasn’t turned his month around, but the team really doesn’t need him to at the moment.
Detroit had a massive win in Toronto last night as not only did it break a three-game winning streak in the most crucial time of the year, but it also vaulted them ahead of the Leafs in the playoff race. It was such a big game in fact, that I wonder how much this team has in the tank for the game today against a team with whom they are not chasing for a playoff spot.
I would normally not be too high on teams playing the second game of a back to back, but before the 4-3 overtime loss to the Minnesota Wild last weekend in such a situation, the Wings had won their previous two by a 13-5 score. Meanwhile, in Tampa’s last two second-game-of-a-back-to-back, they have given up 10 goals against (1-1 record). It seems like a good game to pick apart the skaters for 50/50s and to round out GPPs but I would leave the goalies alone.
